For Those Considering Their First Original Artwork
Many people in Japan enjoy visiting museums and exhibitions, and often leave with a postcard or an art book from the museum shop. However, collecting original artwork and living with it at home may still feel unfamiliar to many people.
There are probably many reasons for this.
Some people may feel they don’t have enough space to display art, while others live in rental homes where hanging pictures on the wall is difficult. Some may simply not realize that it is possible to purchase original works directly from artists.
In many other countries, however, it is quite common to decorate living spaces with paintings, ceramics, and handmade objects. While traveling, I have often noticed paintings and decorative plates hanging naturally on the walls of people’s homes.
I still remember a scene from a television drama where a friend visited someone’s new home and casually said,
“That wall is empty. You should hang a nice painting there.”
That simple remark stayed with me.
Art is not only something to admire in museums.
A single painting in your room can quietly change with the light, the seasons, and the moments of everyday life.
Perhaps that is one of the joys unique to an original artwork—something that cannot quite be experienced with a reproduction.
An original piece does not have to be large or expensive.
Even a small work can become a meaningful presence in your daily life. If hanging it on the wall isn’t practical, simply placing it on a shelf or displaying it on a small easel can be just as wonderful.
If you ever come across a piece that truly speaks to you, I hope you’ll consider welcoming it into your home.
Little by little, it may become part of the scenery of your everyday life.
