Until now, I have created and published art books mainly to coincide with large-scale events. At these events, the primary purpose is different from that of a gallery exhibition; they are centered around “selling.” Therefore, my focus was always on having new releases ready, as well as preparing main featured pieces and merchandise. It felt natural to align the creation of my art books with those event timelines.
Recently, however, I have come to realize that I want to create books specifically tailored to my solo exhibitions.
At museums and formal art galleries, there is always an “exhibition catalog.” It is a book that compiles explanations of the exhibited pieces, information about the artist, the background of the creation, and the overarching theme of the show. It is, in essence, a piece of art itself—allowing you to bring home the very memory of the exhibition.
My creative yearnings and activities throughout the year revolve entirely around my solo exhibitions. The amount of energy and emotion I pour into creating works for a solo exhibition is uniquely intense; it is one of the very core elements of my life as an artist.
In the past, because I had to focus entirely on painting, framing, and preparing for the installation right before a show, I simply did not have the luxury of time to produce a catalog. Yet, I know that a solo exhibition is where I have the largest number of new works, and it is where I am channeling my greatest strength.
To take the body of work created specifically for that unique time and space, and to weave it together into an exhibition catalog—when I thought about it, this felt like the most natural and beautiful form a book could take.
For those who are able to visit the gallery in person, I believe having a catalog will allow them to carry the memory of the space with them even more deeply. For those who cannot make it to the venue, it will serve as a window through which they can still experience and enjoy a piece of that atmosphere.
To me, an exhibition catalog is not just a collection of artworks; it is a book meant to carry home the memories of that specific exhibition. From now on, I hope to compile and present my works in the form of a catalog for each solo exhibition I hold.
I hope you will look forward to this new endeavor alongside the exhibitions themselves. It would bring me great joy to preserve not only the physical paintings but also the very air and time of those spaces within the pages of a book.
